Christmas is just around the corner and I decided that I would try my hand at homemade Christmas tree ornaments. This was such a fun craft and a great way to use some leftover spangles that were hanging out in my craft drawer. I hope you enjoy this tutorial as much as I did.
- Black Felt (two squares about 5″ by 5″)
- Shiny spangles, glitter, beads, or fake jewels.
- A needle and thread
- A print out template of a fleur de lis (I googled one and printed out the one I was happiest with)
- Black ribbon
First, I googled images of fleur de lis and found an image I was mostly happy with. Then I simplified the model using a sharpie because that will make it easier to cut out and sew later.
Then cut it out and pin it to the felt.
Put these two together felt pieces together and sew them together (there are no right or wrong sides and we are not turning them inside out). Also, leave a one-inch space that is not sewn on one side because we are going to stuff this ornament.
Stuff this puppy, then sew up the open spot. It’s kind of difficult to get the stuffing in so I used a pencil.
Then tie the ribbon into a loop and use the sewing machine to sew it on the top of the ornament using a sewing machine.
Now thread a needle and thread and start sewing the spangles on. Here’s how I do it, but you can also use glitter glue or beads or you could glue on plastic jewels. I just wanted to use some of my spangles.

Here are some of the progress shots.
Once all the spangles or glittery things have been sewn on this project is complete. Wrap it up and use it as a unique handmade gift for a friend or family members. As always, glamour shots.
